One hundred years ago, the world was in the middle of a war, the likes of which had never been seen before. One hundred years ago, people of every nation began to realize that the international conflict was far from over; that the glory and excitement of service was diminishing as the loss of life increased. One hundred years ago, soldiers of the Somme prayed for deliverance and thought of their families for one last time.
The world has changed since then, but in the midst of our everyday lives, we cannot forget those who fought, suffered, and died for the freedom we have today. Today is not a day of celebration or mourning. Today is a day of remembrance; to take at least one minute out of our day, no matter how busy, to stand up, bow our heads, appreciate what we have and to think of how far we’ve come.
